VCT 5 Format

We are delighted to announce that we have taken yet another step ahead in the new edition of VCT - Virtual Chess Tournament. Our VCT family will now grow from 24 to 32! Most of the players who have played in VCT 4 have intended to continue in VCT 5 and we have some new players as well. That's the 'Big' part of it.

We asked you in VCT 4 Opinion and you said you are fine to play against any player of any rating. So here we go! After VCT 3 and VCT 4, which were seeded tournaments, we will now have VCT 5, which, like VCT 2 will be unseeded. In VCT 5, all the 32 players will be allocated in 8 groups randomly, in the VCT 5 Group Allocation Ceremony and any 4 players can be in a group! That's the 'Bad' part of it!

Complete list of players will be shared as soon as the registration process start for VCT 5. Group Allocation will be done in the below format, where Player 1 is the first player name selected in the ceremony and so on. 


Group Stage Matches :

After Group Allocation, the Group Stage matches will be played in each group for 6 Gameweeks. Each player from each group will play 2 matches with opposite colors against the other 3 players in that group. A sample match schedule for Group A is given below for understanding. Detailed schedule for all the Groups will be published after the Group Allocation ceremony.

Qualification for the Knockouts:

The top two players from each group will qualify for the Knockouts rounds. Top two players of each group will be determined based on total points from 6 matches. In case of same points, player with higher OP (Opponent's Points) will qualify. Details of OP is provided on the Rules & Prizes Blog. 

Please also check the Knockout match rules in the blog. The rules will be same for all the Knockout matches from RO16 to the Final.


Round of 16 :

Knockout matches start with Round of 16, where 8 matches will be played between the 16 qualified players in the below format. 


Quarter Finals :

Winners of the Round of 16 matches will play the Quarter Finals matches in the below format. 

Semi Finals :

Winners of the Quarter Final matches will play the Semi Final matches in the below format. 

3rd Place :

Players who lost the Semi Final matches will play against each other to fight for the 3rd Place. 

Final : 

Winners of the Semi Final matches will play the Grand Finale against each other to fight for the Champion spot for VCT 5!

  VCT 5 – Rules and Regulations All games to be played in the tournament will be 15| 10 Rapid rated games on chess.com.  Choice of Black or White colors for VCT 5 matches is different for Group Stages and Knockout Stages as given below. There will be no seeding in VCT 5. Game timings –   The matches for each Gameweek (in Group Stage)  will be published upfront in the match schedule and in the Whatsapp group by the Volunteers. Players can mutually agree on a time for that match. Matches can be preponed or postponed within the gameweek, if mutually agreed between the players.  Please note, if there is a ‘No Show’ from any player (15 minutes waiting period) on a mutually agreed timeslot, the opponent player gets full 2 points (win points) for 'No-Show'....

VCT 5 - Committee

It is a pleasure to announce that we have formed the VCT 5 Committee for conducting the 5th version of Virtual Chess Tournament, inspired by your support and encouragement. As we aspire to grow our VCT family, we certainly need more help. We have introduced some new roles within VCT committee as given below for the 5th Edition, and we will reconsider the roles again in VCT 6, which will mostly be Clash of Clans 2 and will need Clan Leads. Name of the next tournament will be VCT 5 - Big Bad World and committee will consist of VCT members who have played at least 2 editions of VCT.  Coordinators  – Jongs  (s hayon62 )  Unfortunately, Matcho ( Hopelessindian) had to step down from the VCT Coordinator role, due to personal concerns.
