VCT 5 - Rules & Regulations
VCT 5 – Rules and Regulations
- All games to be played in the tournament will be 15| 10 Rapid rated games on chess.com.
- Choice of Black or White colors for VCT 5 matches is different for Group Stages and Knockout Stages as given below.
- There will be no seeding in VCT 5. All 32 players will be allocated in 8 groups randomly in the Group Allocation ceremony, which will be conducted online on a public forum so that all other players can attend the same and experience the fun!
- Game timings – The matches for each Gameweek (in Group Stage) will be published upfront in the match schedule and in the Whatsapp group by the Volunteers. Players can mutually agree on a time for that match. Matches can be preponed or postponed within the gameweek, if mutually agreed between the players.
- Please note, if there is a ‘No Show’ from any player (15 minutes waiting period) on a mutually agreed timeslot, the opponent player gets full 2 points (win points) for 'No-Show'.
- One of the many good things about VCT is that the schedule is flexible. If you have other priority work or facing any odd circumstances, please inform the Volunteers upfront, and they will do a reasonable rearrangement.
- Walkover is allowed. The player getting the walkover will get full 2 points (win points). The accuracy in that match won’t be counted for both the players.
- Matches with resignations will not be considered for the 'Fastest Checkmate' Prize category. In case in a group, if there has not been any checkmate, the player with highest OP in that group will get the prize in this category.
- If there is a network issue, then chess.com will automatically consider the other player as the winner. The player who lost the match (who suffered network disruption) can appeal to the Volunteers for a rematch. Volunteers along with Consultant Panel will review the last position and other factors to decide and confirm if a rematch can be granted to the player or not.
- If anyone is suspected and then caught in unfair practices, like cheating in any form, using engines, or impersonating for others, he/she will be banned from the current and all future tournaments of VCT. VCT committee is very much driven to establish fair play in the tournaments.
- In case of any dispute, the decision of VCT 5 committee will be final.
Group Stage Rules:
- Choice of White or Black pieces for the players is determined upfront for every match in Group Stage for VCT 5 and will be published upfront at the start of the tournament. At the start of the match if the players are allocated differently to what is in schedule, the match needs to be abandoned and a fresh match request needs to be sent. There will be no change in a player's chess.com rating if a match is abandoned.
- Points accumulated in the Group Stage matches– Win - 2, Draw – 1, Loss – 0
- If two or more players within a group have same points, then players with more number of matches won will be placed higher. If number of wins is also same, then player with maximum Opponent's Point (please see below) will be selected. If OP is also same, then the player with better Average Accuracy will be placed higher.
Knockout Round Rules :
- White or Black will be determined by chess.com automatically at the start of every match. The colors selected automatically at the first attempt will be the 'final' color each player has to play. In case of network interruptions, if the first game gets aborted, the players again have to play in the final color that was chosen at the first attempt.
- If there is a Draw in any knockout matches, there will be a rematch (Rapid rated 15|10) immediately. The player who played white in the previous match would play black in the rematch. The process will continue, unless we have a decider match (if the rematch also ends up in a draw). Only the latest deciding matches will be recorded in VCT 5.

Opponent's Point (OP) = Sum total of the value of the pieces left on board for opponent in matches won by the player (OP to be considered for resignation, checkmate, timeout). OP is not calculated for Win by No-Show or Walkover or drawn and lost matches. Explanation of Opponent's point rule is given below with illustrations.
First, let's see the point value for each piece in Chess -
Pawn = 1
Bishop = 3
Knight = 3
Rook = 5
Queen = 9
Now value of King is infinite, but in theory it is 3.5. But the value of King is not considered for Opponent's Point calculation, as the King will always be on board after the match on chess.com.
So the 1st picture is the match end position for Sudipta (white) and Aneek (black) from VCT 3. Sudipta won by resignation in this match.
OP for Sudipta from this match = Value of (4 pawns + 2 rooks) = 4*1 + 2*5 = 4 + 10 = 14
The 2nd picture is the match end position for Abhishek (white) and Neha (black), again from VCT 3. Neha won by checkmate.
OP for Neha from this match = Value of (6 Pawns + 2 Rooks + 1 Bishop + Queen) = 6*1 + 2*5 + 1*3 + 9 = 6 + 10 + 3 + 9 = 28.
Now for comparison's sake, if Sudipta and Neha are tied up on same point, also has the same number of matches won, then player with higher OP will be placed higher in the group.
So here, Neha gets the priority over Sudipta.
Idea is, it is better to win a match with more power of your opponent left on board!
